Our nursery class has been buzzing with excitement as we embark on a creative journey through our new whole-class reading book, The Gingerbread Man. This timeless tale has come to life in so many fun and engaging ways, sparking curiosity and creativity in our little ones. From outdoor flour play to science investigations, our students have been fully immersed in the world of this classic story!
Our outdoor garden has been transformed into a mini gingerbread bakery as the children have explored the texture of flour, feeling and manipulating it with their hands. It’s been a fantastic sensory experience that has helped our young learners develop their fine motor skills while engaging their imaginations in the context of the story.
In class, we’ve been using role-play food items to compare weights, bringing the world of The Gingerbread Man to life in a hands-on way. The children have been using scales to measure and compare different food items, helping them understand the concepts of weight and balance while making connections to the foods featured in the story.
One of the highlights of our learning has been recalling the sounds of farm animals. We’ve been playing fun farm animal games, encouraging the children to recall and mimic the sounds of the animals in the story. It’s been a great way to reinforce learning and have some lively, interactive fun with our young learners!
In our tuff tray, we’ve created an immersive environment that brings the characters and settings of The Gingerbread Man to life. The children have been exploring the characters, examining the settings, and using figurines to re-enact their favorite parts of the story. This has helped foster imaginative play while reinforcing key story elements.
Science came alive with our ginger biscuit investigations! The children conducted hands-on experiments by dipping ginger biscuits into different liquids to observe the reactions. It’s been a wonderful way to introduce simple scientific concepts while linking them to the gingerbread theme.
To complement our theme, we’ve been singing Five Currant Buns. The children have enjoyed singing along and even counting the currant buns as we go, which has helped with their maths skills.
Our budding artists have been busy creating large-scale gingerbread men artwork. Working together as a group, the children have designed and decorated their gingerbread figures, learning about collaboration, color, and creativity along the way. It’s been amazing to see them work together.
Inspired by the story, the children have been constructing bridges over our “blue ribbon river.” This activity has sparked critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving as the children work to design and build stable bridges. Afterall, we couldn’t let the fox eat the gingerbread man.
Fine motor skills were put to the test as the children decorated their gingerbread men with sparkling jewels using tweezers. This activity supported their hand-eye coordination and precision.
We’ve also been having fun with the key phrases from The Gingerbread Man. The children have been adapting these phrases with different gross motor movements, such as running fast, jumping high, and tiptoeing, mimicking the gingerbread man’s escape from the characters in the story. It’s been a great way to combine literacy and physical activity!
It’s been an incredible journey through The Gingerbread Man, and our nursery class has loved every minute of it! With so many hands-on activities, our little learners have had the chance to explore, create, and learn in the most exciting ways. We can’t wait to see where our next adventure takes us!
